How to Read a QR Code From an Image File

2 min de lecture

Here's the actual process for decoding a QR code from an image with QR code reader.

Two steps: drop an image, get the decoded text back A pipeline: drop an image containing a QR code, and the decoded text appears automatically, ready to copy. Drop an image Decoded text Copy / Open
Decoding starts automatically the instant a file is chosen - there's no separate button to find.

Step 1 - drop or choose the image

Choose or drag in a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or BMP image, up to 25 MB. There's nothing to configure first - decoding starts the moment a file is chosen.

Step 2 - watch the two-stage progress

The loading panel briefly shows "Reading image…" then "Looking for a QR code…" while the actual search runs. This happens off the main thread, in a background worker, so the tab stays responsive even on a large photo.

Step 3 - read the result

A successful decode shows a type badge - Web link, Text, WiFi network, Email address, or Phone number - drawn from what the code actually encodes, plus the exact decoded content in a selectable block below it. Copy is always available. An Open button additionally appears only for a web link, an email address, or a phone number, each opening through the browser's own normal handler - a new tab, your mail app, your phone app. A WiFi network or a plain Text result gets Copy only: a WiFi QR encodes its network name and password inside one string starting with WIFI:, which this tool shows exactly as encoded rather than parsing it into separate fields, so there's nothing there for a browser to safely open - you copy the string and read the network name and password out of it yourself.

If it doesn't find anything

A blurry, tiny, or genuinely QR-free image gets a plain "couldn't find a QR code" message rather than an error. A decoder has to search the whole image for the code's corner markers before it can even attempt to read the data, so a large or noisy photo takes longer than a clean screenshot - and a search that never resolves is capped at ten seconds rather than left to hang indefinitely. A clearer or closer version of the image usually fixes it.

For why an image-based reader is a different job from a phone's camera, see the background piece. For specific scenarios like a code in a PDF attachment, this guide covers it. Or decode an image now.
