Only if it has embedded images to recompress. A scanned or photographed document usually has plenty to save - in testing, a typical scan came down about 45% smaller at "Recommended" and around 75% smaller at "Smallest file". A PDF that is already just text has nothing to compress.

You'll see an honest message instead of a fake improvement, and Download hands back your original file, byte for byte - never a larger one.

"Recommended" keeps pages looking the same at normal size. "Smallest file" trades a little sharpness, visible only if you zoom in close, for the smallest possible file.

No artificial cap - only the practical limit every browser tab has. Each PDF must be under 80 MB.
