Frequently asked questions
No. Everything happens in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere - not even to check a word count.
Yes. Word and character counting work correctly for every language this site supports, including all Arabic variants. Reading-level scoring (like Flesch-Kincaid) is English-only and isn't offered here, since there's no reliable equivalent for other languages.
Reading time uses 200 words per minute, and speaking time uses 130 words per minute - both common estimates for silent reading and spoken pace.
The tool works best under 200,000 characters. Longer text is still counted correctly, it may just update a little more slowly.
Guides
A closer look at specific problems this tool solves.
Why 'About 500 Words' Isn't Close Enough
A block of text that looks like about 500 words is very often not. Eyeballing a word count fails in exactly the situations where the number actually matters.

At an average spoken rate, a 5-minute speech runs to roughly 650 words. Here's the math behind that number, and how to use it while you're actually drafting a talk.
