Hash generator guides
Three short reads: why this matters, how to do it, and one specific way to use it.
Why MD5 and SHA-1 Are Still Everywhere, and Wrong for Passwords
Hashing splits into two unrelated jobs: proving a file wasn't corrupted, and protecting a password. MD5 and SHA-1 are still fine for the first. Using any of these five algorithms for the second is a real, common mistake.

Type or paste text, pick an algorithm, and the digest updates live as you type. Here's the actual process, including what happens over an insecure connection and with very long or non-English text.

Neither one is wrong in every context. MD5 is still the right answer when you're matching a checksum a system already published in it. SHA-256 is the right default for almost everything else.
