How to Make a WiFi QR Code Guests Can Scan to Join Instantly

4 min read

Here's the actual process for making a WiFi QR code with WiFi QR code generator, from typing the network details to a printable result.

Network name, password, and security type feeding a live QR code preview and download Three input fields - SSID, password, security type - feeding into a live QR code preview box, with an arrow onward to a download step. Network name Password Security: WPA/WEP/None Download / print
The code updates live as each field is typed - nothing to click before it's already there.

Step 1 - type the network name and password

Real network names (SSIDs) top out at 32 bytes - the ceiling the WiFi standard allows, not an arbitrary limit this tool invented - and the tool warns you if you go past it. Passwords top out at 63 characters, the real WPA2 passphrase ceiling, with the same warning. Type both exactly as they're configured on the router; a QR code that encodes a mistyped password will produce a code that fails to connect just as surely as a mistyped password typed by hand would.

Step 2 - pick the security type

Three options: WPA/WPA2 for essentially any network set up in the last 15+ years - the overwhelming majority of home and office routers today. WEP only for very old hardware still running the outdated, now-insecure standard it replaced years ago. None for a genuinely open network with no password at all - selecting this disables the password field's effect entirely, and the tool warns you if a password was typed while security is set to None, since it would otherwise be silently ignored.

Step 3 - tick "hidden network" if it applies

A hidden network doesn't broadcast its name publicly, which normally means a device has to be told the exact name manually before it can even see the network to join. Ticking This is a hidden network bakes that detail into the QR code itself, so a scanning phone knows to look for a network that isn't publicly advertised, rather than failing to find it in the list.

Step 4 - check contrast, download, and share

Like the plain QR generator this tool shares its rendering engine with, the foreground and background colors can be customized, and a contrast warning appears if the pair is too close to scan reliably. Set a download size (200 to 1,000px) and download as PNG or SVG, then print or display it wherever guests will actually see it - covered next in where that is and isn't a good idea.

What's actually encoded

The tool builds a standard WiFi QR payload - the same format used across QR generators generally, not a proprietary one - combining the network name, password, security type, and hidden flag into one string, then encodes that string the same way any other text would be encoded into a QR code. A phone's camera app recognizes this specific format and offers to join the network directly, rather than treating it as a link to open.

Special characters in a network name or password are handled automatically

The WiFi QR format uses a semicolon to separate its own fields, so a network name or password that happens to contain a semicolon, comma, backslash, or double quote needs those characters escaped, or the payload breaks in a way that can silently misjoin a device to the wrong thing. This tool escapes exactly those four characters automatically before building the payload, so typing a password like pass;word or a network name containing a comma works correctly without needing to know the underlying format has a reserved-character rule at all.

Nothing here goes to a server

The SSID, the password, and the finished QR code all stay inside the browser tab the entire time - there's no upload, no account, and no third-party service the code depends on to keep working. The QR code you download today will connect a phone to that network for as long as the network's own credentials stay the same, with nothing on this tool's end to expire or go offline.

For why this beats reading a password aloud in the first place, see the background. Or make a WiFi QR code now.
